Equal Ground Action Fund Statement on the Loss and Hope of Angie Nixon for the United States Senate
While yesterday’s election did not produce the outcome we had hoped for, it does not diminish the significance of what Angie Nixon accomplished or the impact her candidacy will have on Florida's political landscape.
Angie's journey from community organizer to candidate for the United States Senate is a powerful reminder that leadership does not have to come from wealth, political connections, or powerful institutions. It can begin with an ordinary person who sees a need in their community, finds the courage to act, and inspires others to join them in the fight for change.
Across Florida, young Black children watched someone who looks like them, understands their communities, and shares many of their lived experiences compete for one of the highest offices in our nation. Although Angie did not make history as Florida's first Black United States senator, she has helped expand what the next generation believes is possible. That impact cannot be measured solely by the results of an election.
Angie has every reason to be proud of what she helped build through this campaign. Beyond her own race, her candidacy helped energize voters and encourage participation up and down the ballot, contributing to the broader momentum surrounding the end of Republican supermajorities in the Florida Legislature. Her campaign demonstrated that building political power is about more than winning a single race. It is also about creating opportunities for change that extend far beyond Election Day.
Equal Ground Action Fund proudly endorsed Angie Nixon because of her commitment to working families, protecting our democracy, and ensuring that the voices of everyday Floridians are heard.
At this critical moment in our nation's history, the issues that inspired Angie's candidacy remain just as urgent as they were before the first ballot was cast. Florida families continue to face challenges surrounding affordability, access to quality education, economic opportunity, and the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms. Those challenges will not disappear with the conclusion of this election, and neither will our commitment to addressing them.
