DeSantis Vetoes $1.5 Billion for 2026-2027 Budget Year

Florida's budget is more than a spending plan, it is a reflection of our values and the priorities we choose to invest in. While Governor DeSantis has now signed the state's budget after vetoing more than $1.5 billion in bipartisan legislative appropriations, the final product represents another missed opportunity to address the challenges facing everyday Floridians.

Communities across our state advocated for investments that would strengthen public education, expand workforce opportunities, improve access to health care, support local infrastructure, and help families struggling with the rising cost of living. Many of those priorities either went underfunded during the legislative process or were eliminated through the Governor's vetoes despite receiving bipartisan support.

Equal Ground is encouraged that funding was preserved for the families of the Groveland Four. As advocates for justice, we recognize that no appropriation can undo the profound injustice they suffered, but this investment represents an important step toward acknowledging one of Florida's darkest chapters and honoring the families whose pursuit of justice has endured for generations.

At the same time, we are disappointed that funding was eliminated for Florida's Historically Black Colleges and Universities, workforce development initiatives, food security programs, youth services, and other community-based investments. These are not simply budget line items, they are investments that expand opportunity, strengthen communities, and improve the quality of life for Floridians. When these investments are cut, it is working families and historically underserved communities that bear the greatest burden.

Florida has the resources to do more. At a time when families continue to face rising housing costs, increasing health care expenses, underfunded public schools, aging infrastructure, and economic uncertainty, this budget should have reflected a stronger commitment to meeting those challenges.
