Equal Ground Action Fund announces its endorsements of Angie Nixon for the United States Senate, David Jolly for Governor, and José Javier Rodríguez for Attorney General in Florida’s 2026 General Election.
These are three of the most consequential statewide offices Floridians will vote on this November, and the people elected to them will hold significant authority over decisions affecting our state and nation. From who represents Florida in the United States Senate, to who sets the direction of our state government, to who serves as Florida’s chief legal officer, the consequences of these elections will extend well beyond Election Day.
At this moment, we cannot afford to get these choices wrong. These three seats have the potential to change the trajectory of our state and, in the case of the U.S. Senate, influence the direction of the nation. The decisions made by the people occupying these offices will affect voting rights, economic opportunity, public education, access to justice, the protection of civil rights, and the ability of communities across Florida to have their voices heard.
For Equal Ground Action Fund, our endorsements are grounded in the records, stated positions, and commitments of the candidates and what those would mean for the communities we serve. We are looking for leadership that respects the right to vote, recognizes the importance of representation, believes government should be accountable to the people, and understands that Florida’s future must include communities that have too often been ignored or excluded from the decisions that affect them.
After considering the candidates and the responsibilities of these offices, Equal Ground Action Fund has endorsed Angie Nixon for U.S. Senate, David Jolly for Governor, and José Javier Rodríguez for Attorney General.
U.S. Senate: Angie Nixon
Representation matters, but representation must also come with leadership and a commitment to the people. Throughout her career as a community organizer, union organizer, and state representative, Angie Nixon has built a public record centered on working families and grassroots communities. Her campaign is rooted in a people-powered approach and has focused on issues that directly affect Floridians' everyday lives, including the rising cost of living, affordable housing, access to health care and child care, quality public education, workers' rights, and protecting voting rights.
At a time when Black political representation and voting rights remain central issues in Florida, we also recognize the historic significance of this election. If elected, Nixon would become Florida’s first Black United States Senator. For us, that history would be accompanied by the election of a leader whose career began at the grassroots level and whose public service has remained focused on many of the same communities that are too often left out of the halls of power.
Our decision also takes into account the record surrounding the Hope Florida controversy. A state grand jury concluded that $10 million connected to a Medicaid settlement was misappropriated for political purposes. Ashley Moody was Attorney General when her office approved the settlement directing $10 million to the Hope Florida Foundation.
For Equal Ground Action Fund, this race is about representation, accountability, and whether working people and grassroots communities have a champion in Washington who understands their struggles and is prepared to fight for the issues that matter in their everyday lives. Those considerations inform our endorsement of Angie Nixon for the United States Senate.
Governor: David Jolly
Equal Ground Action Fund endorses David Jolly for Governor.
Our decision reflects our assessment of the candidates’ stated positions on voting rights and the direction of state government. One issue of particular importance to our organization is the proposed Harry T. and Harriette V. Moore Florida Voting Rights Act.
During the campaign, Byron Donalds stated that he would not support the proposed Florida Voting Rights Act, citing election security and arguing that Florida's existing election laws provide appropriate protections.
Equal Ground Action Fund believes voting-rights protections and access to the ballot should remain central considerations in Florida’s next administration. We also believe state leadership should be capable of working across political and ideological differences while remaining responsive to communities throughout Florida.
Those considerations inform our endorsement of David Jolly for Governor.
Attorney General: José Javier Rodríguez
Equal Ground Action Fund endorses José Javier Rodríguez for Attorney General. Rodríguez and incumbent Attorney General James Uthmeier are the qualified Democratic and Republican candidates, respectively, in the 2026 General Election.
Our endorsement reflects concerns about actions taken during Uthmeier’s tenure as Attorney General and his earlier service as Governor Ron DeSantis’ chief of staff. As Attorney General, Uthmeier issued a formal opinion concluding that various state laws involving race-based preferences or classifications are unconstitutional, a position that drew criticism from members of the Florida Legislative Black Caucus.
The Hope Florida investigation is also relevant to our assessment. The state grand jury concluded that $10 million was misappropriated and identified Uthmeier as having been in a position of authority over individuals involved in the settlement process; his political committee ultimately received much of the money. The grand jury concluded there was insufficient evidence to criminally charge any individual. Uthmeier has disputed allegations of wrongdoing and characterized renewed scrutiny of the matter as politically motivated.
Equal Ground Action Fund believes the Attorney General’s Office has an especially important responsibility to uphold the law, protect Floridians’ rights, and maintain public confidence in the impartial administration of justice. Those considerations inform our endorsement of José Javier Rodríguez.
