PRESSER: Leading FL Voting Rights Advocates to Kick Off Day of Action Against Illegal Mid-Decade Redistricting Ahead of House Select Committee Hearing

TALLAHASSEE & VIRTUAL – On Tuesday, December 2, a broad and diverse coalition of voters and advocates representing Florida communities across multiple congressional districts will hold a press conference at the State Capitol – ahead of the first meeting of the Florida House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting on 12/4 – calling on Florida’s political leaders to reject any effort to pursue mid-decade partisan redistricting. 

During the press conference, community leaders will kick off a "We Draw the Lines: No Partisan Maps" Day of Action as they demand that state lawmakers rise above political infighting and focus on issues shaping the lives of everyday Floridians, such as affordable housing, access to healthcare, quality public education, economic opportunity, and safe communities, while prioritizing accountability, fairness, and real solutions that strengthen communities, expand opportunity, and ensure government works for everyone. 

Florida’s push for an unprecedented mid-decade redistricting is in direct response to President Donald Trump’s call for Republican-led states to gerrymander their lines to allow his political party to hold the United States House of Representatives in the midterm elections next year. This would violate the will of Florida voters who passed the Fair Districts Amendments to establish a constitutional prohibition against partisan political gerrymandering.

Following the press conference, community members will participate in legislative office visits and coordinated outreach to lawmakers, showing that Floridians won’t stand for illegal political manipulation of our representation in Congress. This press conference and Day of Action comes just two days before the Florida House Select Committee on Congressional Redistricting is scheduled to meet for the first time on December 4.
