Leading Florida Voting Rights Groups in State Redistricting Lawsuit to Hold Press Call Ahead of May 11 Hearing
VIRTUAL – On Tuesday, May 10th, Equal Ground, Florida Rising, League of Women Voters of Florida, and Black Voters Matter will hold a press call with fellow co-litigants, supported by the National Redistricting Foundation, in Florida’s state redistricting lawsuit.
During the call, co-litigants, as well as legal counsel, will discuss the details of the motion they have filed seeking a preliminary injunction which calls for a halt to the enforcement of Governor DeSantis’ unconstitutional map for the 5th Congressional District while this lawsuit works its way through the courts. Additionally, litigants will lay out why the courts must not let this discriminatory map stand, as it violates Florida’s Constitution and the Fair Districts Amendments by diminishing the voting strength of Black voters.
The governor himself has acknowledged that his redistricting maps do not comply with the Florida Supreme Court’s 2015 ruling about Fair Districts, and with this lawsuit, Florida’s leading voting rights groups are ensuring that no person is above the law and that every Floridian – no matter where they come from or what they look like – has their voice heard.
Tuesday’s press call comes just one day ahead of the hearing on the preliminary injunction, which is scheduled for 9am ET on May 11th.
