UPDATE: Special Session on Florida Budget

In a last effort to control local government funding, outgoing Florida lawmakers passed a property tax cut proposal that will appear on the November 2026 ballot. While many Floridians are struggling with the rising cost of living, slashing property taxes could do more harm than good for Floridians. 

Expansion of homestead exemptions would only go to existing homeowners, while many working-class families may see little direct relief. At the same time, reducing local property tax revenues will impact funding for neighborhood infrastructure, public transportation, libraries, parks, community programs, and other public services that our communities depend on. Taking away property tax revenue from local government invades Florida's home rule. Local communities should be able to make local decisions. If residents feel that their local elected officials spend too much, they are able to hold them accountable locally. The State should not have a say in local funding or spending. 

As this proposal moves to voters, we encourage each person to closely examine who benefits, who is left out, and how these changes could affect the services that help communities thrive.
