IMPEACHMENT PUSH RAISES CONCERNS AMID PATTERN OF TARGETING BLACK ELECTED OFFICIALS

Governor Ron DeSantis and Attorney General James Uthmeier are calling for the impeachment of Leon County Circuit Judge Tiffany Baker-Carper, a Black woman, after she allowed a convicted sex offender to remain free on bond before sentencing. The individual later killed his 5-year-old stepdaughter, leading to the passage of “Missy’s Law,” which now requires certain offenders to be held until sentencing.

However, it remains unclear whether the judge had full information about the defendant’s risk, with reports suggesting prosecutors may not have fully presented the danger.

The impeachment push has sparked backlash from legal advocates who warn it threatens judicial independence and reflects a broader pattern of targeting Black elected officials. Judges also face barriers in publicly defending themselves due to ethical rules, making it harder to clear their names amid political attacks.
