Dear Florida Congressional Delegation,
We, the undersigned voting rights organizations, write to express our deep
concerns regarding the SAVE Act (H.R. 22)—a harmful piece of legislation
that threatens to disenfranchise eligible voters in Florida and across the
country.
Citizenship is already a requirement to vote in federal elections, but it is not
always the easiest thing to prove. The SAVE Act would impose strict proof
of citizenship requirements—such as a passport or birth certificate—to
register or update voter registration. These documents are not always
readily available to every citizen, and requiring them to be presented in
person creates unnecessary burdens that disproportionately impact Black
voters, other communities of color, low-income individuals, older voters,
women who have changed their last names, and those who have lost
essential documents due to natural disasters.
For Black and marginalized voters, the SAVE Act represents yet another
obstacle in a long history of voter suppression tactics. Many already face
systemic barriers to obtaining government-issued documents, and adding
these strict requirements would unjustly burden eligible citizens, reducing
participation in our democracy. Rather than strengthening election security,
this bill creates unnecessary hurdles that silence eligible voters and
weaken our democratic system.
We firmly believe that our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter
has equal access to participate. We urge you to oppose the SAVE Act and
stand up for the fundamental right to vote.
