PRESSER: Equal Ground & Leading FL Advocates to Respond to Gov. DeSantis’ State of the State, Outline Legislative Priorities
Following DeSantis’ State of the State, key Florida advocates will come together to react while laying out their top priorities on day one of the FL legislative session
TALLAHASSEE & LIVESTREAM – On Tuesday, January 13th, Equal Ground – the preeminent Black-led, non-partisan, non-profit working to build Black political power in Florida – and other leading Florida advocacy organizations will hold a media roundtable to respond to Governor DeSantis' State of the State address and outline their top legislative priorities.
As Florida heads into the final legislative session of Governor DeSantis’ term, advocates will seize this moment to highlight the critical work required to support communities throughout the state and will urge the Governor to use this final session to put Floridians first, the one thing lawmakers have repeatedly failed to do during DeSantis’ tenure.Â
Too often, the Governor’s time in office has been shaped by partisan agendas and national and federal influence rather than the needs of everyday Floridians. And with threats to suppress voters and manipulate districts to consolidate political power escalating in Florida and nationwide, advocates are urging the state’s lawmakers to safeguard democracy by rejecting any effort to pursue mid-decade partisan redistricting and enact policies that protect voting rights, defend civil liberties, and expand opportunities for affordable housing, healthcare access, quality public education, economic mobility, and safe communities, ensuring that all Floridians have a real voice in government.
Tuesday’s roundtable will feature remarks from top Florida advocates and community leaders, including Genesis Robinson, Executive Director of Equal Ground, Andrew Spar, President of Florida Education Association, Johnathan Scott Webber, Policy Director of Southern Poverty Law Center, Amy Keith, Executive Director of Common Cause Florida, Abdelilah Skhir, Senior Strategist at American Civil Liberties Union, Dr. Byron Green, Justice Over Everything, Jessica Lowe Minor, President of League of Women Voters of Florida, Natasha Sutherland, Executive Director of Florida Watch, and Jamil Davis, Black Voters Matter.
