Update: Florida Supreme Court Sides with Gov. DeSantis on Partisan Maps

Statement from Equal Ground Executive Director Genesis Robinson

Let’s be clear, the Florida Supreme Court's failure to stop this brazen partisan power grab is not only an assault on democracy, but an abdication of its duty to the people of Florida. Courts are meant to serve as a check on government overreach and a safeguard against constitutional violations, but, once again, when Floridians needed that protection most, the Court declined to intervene.

The Florida Constitution is clear: districting maps should not be drawn to favor a political party. And by allowing a map designed to deliver approximately 86% of Florida's congressional districts to a single party to remain in place, the Court has turned a blind eye to the very protections voters enshrined in our Constitution.

Yet again, Florida voters will be forced to endure another election cycle under a map drawn in open defiance of the Fair Districts Amendment – a constitutional mandate that 63% of Floridians passed to protect voters from unfair and discriminatory redistricting.

The time to protect voters from irreparable harm is before another election takes place under this map. And while we remain committed to ensuring that Florida's constitutional protections are fully upheld, Florida voters deserve fair maps, fair representation, and a democracy that works for everyone now.
