What You Need to Know About the New Law: SB 90
​
On May 6, 2021, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 90 into law. The new law brings a series of changes to the way Florida runs elections. The law, effective immediately, imposes many barriers to voting by mail and using absentee ballots at drop boxes. Here is what you need to know:

Cuts the days and hours drop boxes will be available in half

Strict new limits to who can return ballots

Prohibits Supervisors from proactively sending voters vote-by-mail ballots

Imposes new ID requirements that will make requesting mail ballots less accessible

Several provisions will lead to more partisan challenges and more rejections of mail ballots and damaged ballots

Restricts the ability of people to give voters standing in line water or food

Imposes harsh $25,000 penalties on Supervisors who leave drop boxes available when it is not allowed

Eliminates the ability of officials to receive private funds even in emergencies

Raises costs for third-party voter registration groups

Sets the stage for legislative intervention in lawsuits challenging bad election laws
